Thug Said "Thank Me Later." Steel Did It Twice.

Fans mobbed Brian Steel outside the courthouse Friday night after Lil Durk walked on all five counts. Ye, Young Thug, G Herbo, 21 Savage, Meek and 50 all reacted within the hour. Durk is still locked up, and the RICO trial starts October 5.

The verdict was the story at 5 p.m. By 8 p.m. the story was the lawyer. When Brian Steel walked out of the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, September 11, the crowd that had been camped outside for three days of deliberation swarmed him and started chanting MVP, per Complex (@complex). Two summers ago it was Young Thug walking out of Fulton County on a plea Steel negotiated after getting himself held in contempt for his client. Now it's Lil Durk, not guilty on all five counts in a case where prosecutors said he "had his shooters on speed dial." Thug's reaction on X was three words: "thank me later."

## The room and the reaction HotNewHipHop (@HotNewHipHop) has the roll call. DJ Akademiks was live on stream when the count came back and looked stunned, which is its own kind of poetry, because a clip from his 2023 sit-down with Durk was part of what the government played in closings. G Herbo and Doe Boy posted celebration videos. 21 Savage posted a photo of him and Durk. Ye reposted the news. Meek Mill, who caught heat last week for a "Free Durk" post, answered with a string of praying hands. Cordae compared Steel to Johnnie Cochran. 50 Cent went a different direction and gave the flowers to Drew Findling, the other half of Durk's defense, who told cameras during deliberations that "the voice is innocent."

Boosie's post was the one that will get quoted the longest: "WHEN U DONT RAT U COME BACK." That's the code the whole trial was actually about, and the jury heard it argued from both sides for three weeks.

## What Steel actually did The government's case was built on OTF insiders who flipped: Kacey "OTF Jam" Hester, Kavon "OTF Vonnie" Grant, Keith "Flacka" Jones. Steel's closing didn't try to explain away the texts or the lyrics. He went at the men. He told the jury Hester "is not human," called the cooperators serial killers pointing at a star to save themselves, and floated Vonnie, King Von's own cousin, as the person who actually ran the 2022 plot on Quando Rondo. "They put a target on a human being. A celebrity human being. That's why you're here."

The split verdict says the jury bought it. Deandre "OTF DeDe" Wilson and David "Browneyez" Lindsey were convicted on the stalking counts and acquitted on murder-for-hire. So the panel believed a plot existed and that those two were in it. They didn't believe the government proved Durk ordered it or paid for it. That's a surgical result, not a blanket one, and it's the same shape as the YSL outcome: the star walks, the circle doesn't.

## Why he isn't home Durk was ordered to stay in custody. The racketeering indictment that was added earlier this year was severed from this trial in July, and Judge Fitzgerald has the RICO case set for October 5, per Complex. That trial is about whether OTF itself was an enterprise, which is a different question with a different evidence pile, and the feds have already said they'll fight release in the meantime. Friday night was a win. It was not the end.

## The cultural close Every big federal rap case of this decade now runs through the same lawyer, and the culture has noticed. Steel's name is a punchline in the good sense: Thug, Durk, and a swarm of fans chanting a sports acronym at a defense attorney on a sidewalk. That's a shift. The old story was the industry watching a rapper go down and posting RIP-style captions after. The new one is a whole ecosystem, from the streamers who covered the trial daily to the artists who posted before the verdict was an hour old, treating a not-guilty like a championship. Whether that survives October 5 is the next question. Steel will be in the room for that one too.
