Hov on Pac and Big: 'They Were Really Close Friends.'

JAŸ-Z in 8 premiered on HBO Sept. 18. The clip that took over the weekend is Jay walking Rick Rubin through how a friendship became a coastal war, and the 'Brooklyn's Finest' line he asked Big to cut.

The premiere was covered. The quote cycle is new. JAŸ-Z in 8 hit HBO and HBO Max on Friday, Sept. 18, and by Saturday one segment was everywhere: Jay, sitting across from Rick Rubin, giving the closest thing to a first-person account of how Tupac and Biggie went from friends to the two poles of a war.

## What Jay said Per HotNewHipHop, Jay's telling starts with the part people forget: Pac and Big "were really close friends" before a certain "element" started moving around Pac. Big, by Jay's account, warned Pac about specific men. Pac passed the warning along, and those men turned on Big. When Pac was shot at Quad Studios in 1994, he blamed Big for it happening in his city. Big, per Jay, declined to escalate past "Who Shot Ya?"

Billboard pulls the detail with the most weight for Brooklyn: Jay asked Big to cut a line from "Brooklyn's Finest" that could have poured gas on the coastal fire. The Reasonable Doubt record that put Jay and Big on wax together almost had a bar in it Jay decided nobody needed.

## The other confession The series also has Jay saying he didn't like being an artist, even with Reasonable Doubt working, per a separate HotNewHipHop pull. For a man who turned a rap career into a sports agency, a spirits portfolio and the NFL's halftime show, it reads less like modesty and more like the thesis of his whole second act.

## The format Eight parts, Rubin directing (his first docuseries), Bradford Young shooting it at the Palais Brongniart in Paris. Shawn Carter and Daniel Kaluuya are among the executive producers. Variety calls the reviews mixed-to-positive; the critique is that two men who respect each other rarely push. The world premiere at the Met Opera House was Sept. 13.

## The read Thirty years of Pac-and-Big history has been narrated by everyone except the New York rapper who was in the room for the Brooklyn half. Jay's version isn't neutral, and it doesn't have to be. It puts Big in the position of the man who tried to de-escalate and Jay in the position of the friend who edited a verse to keep the peace. Believe what you want; the culture finally has Hov's account on the record, and it's the reason a slow-paced HBO conversation series owned hip-hop's weekend.
