JAŸ-Z and Rick Rubin premiered the eight-part HBO series at Lincoln Center's Metropolitan Opera House Sunday night with Beyoncé, DiCaprio, SZA, Kaluuya, Khaled and Fat Joe in the room. Two episodes land September 18, then two a week through October 9.

Hov took the Met. Not Yankee Stadium, not Stade de France. The Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, tuxedo on, Rick Rubin next to him, and a room full of people who came to watch him talk about his own bars.

## What happened Sunday night, September 13, @Hot97 was on the carpet as JAŸ-Z and Rubin premiered JAŸ-Z In 8, the eight-part HBO Original that hits HBO and HBO Max this Friday, September 18. Complex and Essence filled in the room: Beyoncé, Leonardo DiCaprio, SZA, Daniel Kaluuya, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Gunna, Yo Gotti, Questlove, Jerrod Carmichael, Winnie Harlow, Lindsey Vonn, Robert Kraft, Michael Rubin. Screening inside, D'USSÉ after-party on Lincoln Center Plaza. Roc Nation shot the whole thing like a state function, because that's what it was.

The tux got its own news cycle. Complex clocked fans tying the look back to earlier Hov eras, which is the whole point of a project built on looking back.

## What the series actually is Rubin interviews, directs and executive produces, his documentary directorial debut, and the format is the McCartney 3, 2, 1 setup pointed at Brooklyn: two men, a table, a catalog. Eight episodes, eight projects. Reasonable Doubt, Vol. 3, The Dynasty, The Blueprint, The Black Album, American Gangster, Watch the Throne, 4:44. Per Billboard and Hot 97, the records on the table include "Can't Knock the Hustle," "Can I Live," "Where I'm From," "Brooklyn's Finest," "99 Problems," "What More Can I Say," "Meet the Parents," "No Church in the Wild," "The Story of O.J.," "Family Feud," "4:44" and "Legacy." Kaluuya exec produces alongside Jay and Rubin.

Rollout: two episodes Friday, September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, streaming on HBO Max the same minute, then two new ones every Friday through October 9.

## Why this one matters Jay does not do access. Thirty years in and the closest we've had to him explaining the writing is a handful of interviews and Decoded. This is eight hours of him line-reading his own catalog to the man who built Def Jam's sound before Jay ever walked into it. The Stade de France run, the Tottenham dates, the Yankee Stadium freestyle Kaepernick is still arguing about, the Blueprint at 25 sitting at No. 1 on Apple Music's rap chart this week. All of it is the same campaign: own the legacy before anybody else narrates it. We said it after Paris. The doc is the receipt.

Then SoFi, October 23 and 24, and whatever the Roc Nation "stay tuned" was actually about.
